Finding a Dance Partner
Ballroom is by definition a partnering dance. We welcome students who wish to partner their teachers, but if you’d like to practice your moves – and ultimately compete – with a partner on mutual terms, you will likely want to seek out a dance partner.
There are no rules, per se, when it comes to finding a dance partner; you can meet him or her in any number of ways. Sometimes, it will be through word of mouth: make a point of asking around, as your teachers, classmates, or friends may have heard of someone in your very same position. Attend social dances; make conversation and meet others in your dance community.
Another resource is online websites and networking. Search google partner search websites, where people will post classified ads describing their location, level, and goals for dancesport. Sometimes, the goal is social dancing; others seek a more serious partnership for competition.
When you do touch base with a potential partner, be sure to discuss schedules, goals, approach to practice, and overall attitudes toward dance. The most important thing when it comes to a competitive ballroom partnership is to have common goals. From there, you’ll be able to work together to establish a schedule for practicing and lessons. And remember: mutual respect is key. Good luck!
